Chapter Nineteen

“Sienna!”

She jumped at the sound of Bethany’s voice, banging her head on the back of the settee. “Ouch. Oh. Bethie. What time is it?”

“It’s after four.” Bethany’s face glowed pearly pink, an indication she was royally pissed. “What the hell are you doing out here? Don’t tell me you were sleeping?”

“Huh?” Sienna felt like she’d not only been sleeping, but had been caught sleeping nude. “I was, eh, just waiting for you. I guess I fell asleep.”

“I told you not to tell me that. How could you fall asleep? Out here?” Bethany demanded.

Easy. Carson. Her eyes darted across the terrain. No sign of him. He’d held her so gently, stroking her arm and then her cheek. She’d been lulled.

That didn’t excuse him leaving her alone though. Carson knew how scared she was. Why did he abandon her? When had he abandoned her? “You don’t need to lecture me. I didn’t mean to fall asleep.”

“What we need to do is get you inside because you shouldn’t have been out here to start with. I can’t believe, after all the crap that’s happened, you sit out here and take a snooze. How could you be so dumb?” Bethany shook her head and walked toward the door, holding it open for her.

Sienna rose and followed, wondering which of the “Alice in Wonderland” pills she’d swallowed this time. The last thing Sienna remembered was Carson pulling her into his arms. She’d meant to push him away and demand answers, but he’d felt so warm and safe. Masculine.

Would her life ever return to normal? She wiped her eyes and almost bumped into Bethany.

“Hurry up, Sienna. You need to fix your ponytail. How’d your hair get so messy?”

Sienna touched her head, remembering the stroke of Carson’s long fingers. Before she could reply, Jeremy called out from his Volkswagen, “Beth, can you two hurry? Our reservations are for five o’clock.”

“Just a couple more minutes,” Bethany called back, hurting Sienna’s ear. Her cousin maintained eye contact, a look of impatience on her face.

“Where are we going with him?” Sienna asked.

“He’s taking us out to eat.”

“No way.”

“We can’t go out alone and I don’t want to stay in the cabin all the time.”

Sienna decided to let Bethany have her romantic dinner, but since it wouldn’t be so romantic with her tagging along, she wouldn’t go. She’d tell her cousin about the instant message the minute she got back from the restaurant. Then, she and Bethany could leave immediately.

“I’m not going to dinner. Just leave me the cell phone this time.” A thought nagged at Sienna’s brain. Was she skipping dinner because she hoped Carson would come back? She had the weird suspicion he’d only disappeared because Bethany arrived.

“I’m so sorry. I forgot I’d put the phone in my purse. Did you need it?” Her cousin’s posture had stiffened.

“Turns out I didn’t.” She’d tell Bethany everything. After her dinner.

“That’s good, but you are so coming with us to dinner. You obviously can’t be trusted to stay inside and keep the doors locked.
